At least one Wisconsin company is succeeding in these tough times

Another day, another multi-million contract for Oshkosh Corp.

The company’s defense arm, Oshkosh Defense, just announced a $290 million supply truck order. The large order follows a $54 million order to provide protective armor for nearly 1,000 trucks and a controversial $3.3 billion order for more than 6,600 military trucks.

I’m happy to see a Wisconsin company doing so well in a tough year. But not everyone is. Two competing firms — Sealy, Texas-based BAE Systems-Tactical Defense Systems LP and Illinois-based Navistar Defense LLC — are protesting the $3.3 billion contract.

How long before these additional contracts come under attack? Is it just sour grapes or do they have a point?

Oshkosh Corp.’s stock price nearly quadrupled in a year (from under $10 a share in January 2009 to nearly $40 on Wednesday). The company is clearly doing well and I’m glad. I’d rather a Wisconsin company land these contracts than out-of-state firms.
