Stimulus money: bust or boon?

Depending on who you talk to, federal stimulus money directed at the construction industry has either been a mirage on the horizon — never actually materializing — or a lifeboat helping companies stay afloat during a terrible year.

Predictions for 2010 and criticism of the stimulus program was varied last week during testimony before the state Legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance. And many in the industry have watched the Wisconsin Office of Recovery and Reinvestment’s money tracker to see how much of the federal money actually makes it to the construction industry.

Even before the money was released, it was causing problems as projects were put on hold to see if stimulus dollars were available.

So, what is the reality? Has stimulus money helped your company? Hurt it? Had little to no effect?

I appreciate that the government is trying to find ways to help the construction industry as it struggles to regain ground lost in the last year or so, but I wonder how much good they are really doing.
